Brendon Atkins Sets Pace for Middlesex Community College $cholarship 5K Run/walk Fundraiser

Road race held October 31 benefits local scholarships

Middletown, October 31, 2009—Runners around the Greater Middletown area joined family and friends for the $cholarship run at Middlesex Community College. Funds raised from the event will benefits scholarship funds for Middlesex Community College Foundation, Inc.

Old Lyme resident, Brendan Atkins won 1st place overall with a time of 17 minutes and 37 seconds and Clinton resident, Nathan Pawelek won 2nd place overall with a time of 18 minutes and 08 seconds. Winners were also awarded by age categories.

“The College is appreciative and grateful to our faculty, staff, students, and community for helping us to come together in this great event that benefits our students’ learning & education,” said Wilfredo Nieves, president Middlesex Community College.

Covering 5 kilometers of country roads, the family-friendly run/walk welcomed everyone including competitive runners to families with strollers. The race began at the upper parking lot at Middlesex at 10 am and looped through the scenic back roads around the college. Everyone was encouraged to return to the Student Lounge to enjoy the big-band sound provided by the Pratt & Whitney Screaming Eagles Band and a Military Vehicle Show featured as part of the day’s activities.

Greg Kline, director of Advancement at Middlesex, said “Between race sponsorships, race entry fees, and fall raffle proceeds, we raised nearly $10,000, the most ever for this event. It takes a great team effort to achieve those results. I especially want to thank our sponsors, Aetna Foundation, AT&T, Liberty Bank, Webster Bank, MiddleOak Insurance, Valley Physical Therapy, Teamsters Union Local No. 1150, Tower Laboratories, Capitol Cleaning Contractors, Young’s Printing, Coca-Cola, Thyme in a Bottle Catering, and WCCC radio for their generous support.”
