Middlesex Community College, Wesleyan University Host Benefit Concert on July 25

On Saturday, July 25, 2015 Middlesex Community College, Wesleyan University, and the family and friends of Stephanie Nelson are hosting Blackbird: A Benefit Concert for the Stephanie Nelson Memorial Scholarship Fund. This benefit will feature a dinner and concert in honor of Ms. Nelson, MxCC student, and the first Broadcast Communications and Multimedia intern from Middlesex Community College at Wesleyan University’s Center for the Arts. Ms. Nelson passed away in January. Proceeds from the benefit will create a scholarship to support future Middlesex Community College students interning at Wesleyan University.

The dinner will be held at Middlesex Community College’s Founders Hall Pavilion, located at 100 Training Hill Road, Middletown from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.; followed by a concert held in Ms. Nelson’s honor at Wesleyan University’s Crowell Concert Hall, located at 50 Wyllys Avenue, Middletown at 8 p.m. A 21-person “all-star band” will be performing The Beatles’ “White Album” (1968) in its entirety. The album features the Paul McCartney tune “Blackbird,” one of Ms. Nelson’s favorite songs.

Andrew Chatfield, who was Ms. Nelson’s internship supervisor, is the Press and Marketing Director for Wesleyan University’s Center for the Arts. Following her internship, Ms. Nelson also worked briefly as Mr. Chatfield’s assistant. He is coordinating the event, and is also playing drums at the concert. Mr. Chatfield was impressed by Ms. Nelson’s skills, personality, and commitment to MxCC and Wesleyan.

“We all appreciated the energy and light that Stephanie brought to our office, and to everything she did,” said Mr. Chatfield. “Her enthusiasm around various phone-calling campaigns resulted in attendance of several groups to Center for the Arts events during her internship, as well as coverage by local media. She also recruited five restaurant partners for a special Valentine’s Day promotion as part of an Arts Catalyze Placemaking Program in 2014.”

“Stephanie was a special young woman with a smile as big as her heart, making her mark at MxCC and at Wesleyan University,” said Rich Lenoce, Director of the Center for New Media at MxCC, where Ms. Nelson was a student. “Like her family here at MxCC, Stephanie developed a special family at Wesleyan, and created another bridge between our two schools.”

Tickets are $45 for dinner and the show, $25 for the show only. To purchase tickets, you may call (860) 983-8625 or (860) 882-9415.
