I am pleased to share with you that Michael Carrano, a graduate of the Ophthalmic Design & Dispensing (OD&D) program in 2014 has just won the National Federation of Opticianry Schools 2014 National College Bowl Competition. This annual event is generously sponsored by Essilor of America and is one of the featured social events of a national meeting that brings together the Opticians Association of America, the National Academy of Opticianry, the Contact Lens Society of America, National Federation of Opticianry Schools, Commission on Opticianry Accreditation, and the two national certifying agencies, the ABO and NCLE.
Michael is already certified by the National Contact Lens Examiners and American Board of Opticianry. Last spring he won a scholarship to attend the Opticians Association of America’s State Leadership Conference and helped to found a new student organization dedicated to developing leadership skills and to networking. Previously he had completed a fellowship in contact lenses with Professor Skip Rivard, and is currently a member of the Board of Directors of the Connecticut Opticians Association.
The competition, held at the National Opticon Conference in Nashville, Tennessee over this past weekend was attended by over 500 leaders of the optical industry and Michael brought home a trophy (pictured) that we will keep until next year’s competition, when hopefully a member of the Class of 2015 will defend our title and bring it back to Middletown.
In his acceptance of the trophy, Michael graciously thanked all of the faculty of MxCC that helped him to graduate this year, acknowledging that all of the fulltime and adjunct faculty that he took courses with played a role in his success. We are so proud of his accomplishment!
