MxCC faculty Dr. Mary Rayappan, associate professor of math, and Justice-Taylor Baker, math instructor, pictured here, gave a very engaging demonstration on using iPad apps in the classroom at Middlesex Community College’s first Technology Showcase.
During their presentation, they explained how to use whiteboard apps like Explain Everything to answer specific questions from students using clear, easy-to-follow visual explanations, a teaching technique that is certainly cutting-edge and innovative. Dr. Rayappan and Ms. Baker have been working hard on this technique for almost a year. In 2013, they presented a paper on this topic in the International Conference for Technology in Collegiate Mathematics.
They also incorporate social media in their classrooms by uploading their instructional videos to the math department’s YouTube channel. Since joining one year ago, their channel has received over 15,000 views from MxCC students, and students around the world.
This sold out conference was free and open to all Connecticut higher education faculty and staff. This year’s theme was “Engaging the 21st Century Learner.” Conference attendees enjoyed presentations and demonstrations by CT faculty and staff, with the purpose of sharing ideas and tools with peers. This event was sponsored by the MxCC Center for Teaching.
