READI Video – Is Online Learning Right for me 12/5/08 Title Slide Is Online Learning right for me? By Distance Learning Department at Middlesex Community College in Middletown, CT Slide 1 Online learning may be a good fit for you. But how can you tell? Slide 2 To be a successful online learner, you need to be self-disciplined and self-motivated. You must be a proficient reader and writer, as that is how you’ll be accessed through the course. You need to be able to meet deadlines and be able to use computers and accessories. Slide 3 How can I be successful? To find out, take the READI online self-assessment available at: http://www.mxcc.commnet.edu/distance/readi.shtml Slide 4 READI stands for Readiness for Education At a Distance Indicator. It is a self-diagnostic tool that assesses students’ likelihood for succeeding in learning online. READI indicates the degree to which an individual student possesses attributes, skills, and knowledge that contribute to success in online learning. Slide 5 The test will take 30 minutes to complete. Upon completing the test, you will see a report showing the results in the five areas: reading comprehension, technical skills, individual attributes, learning styles, and typing speed and accuracy. Review your results carefully and identify where there are weaknesses (65% or lower) in your skill set. At the end of the report, online resources are provided to help you improve your skills. Slide 6 Once you’ve taken the self-assessment, you might want to explore, in more detail, some of the courses we offer at: http://www.mxcc.commnet.edu/distance/classes.shtml The course syllabus contains general requirements. To find the syllabus, scroll down to the specific class. If a course has been run before, you will be able to view the syllabus from the previous semester.
