As a new student to the college, you are bound to have questions. New Student Orientation is your most effective first step towards getting your questions answered, and we are here to help. Whether you are taking one class or several, to earn a degree with us or transfer, or for personal enrichment or career advancement, MxCC has the resources to assist you in accomplishing your goals.
All New, Transfer and Readmit students are expected to attend ONE full session of the New Student Orientation sessions by booking a date on the calendar below.
See exceptions under calendar.
During New Student Orientation you will:
- Take a tour of campus and learn about campus and web support resources
- Log on to myCommnet, tour Blackboard, our online platform, and link to your college assigned email
- Hear from student leaders about their academic and co-curricular experiences and learn about MxCC clubs
- Learn about the Bookstore and purchasing textbooks
- Learn what to expect your first day
- Meet other new students!
- Receive a NSO Guidebook
When possible before or after your Orientation session, you may get your photo taken for your Student ID card and get your card (not available at evening sessions).
When possible after your Orientation, you may be able to get your textbooks (not in Meriden or evening sessions).
Light refreshments will be served.
Planning for your Orientation Session
The Orientation session is designed to prepare you not only for your first day but to familiarize you with the campus, our student support resources, our myCommNet and Blackboard portals, textbook purchasing and some important Middlesex policies. You will meet current students and other new students. The session lasts approximately four hours. It is important to be on time and stay for the duration of the program. You will receive a complete packet of information as we do not expect you to remember all that you will learn in four hours. [Faculty are off-contract during the summer & winter term so it is unlikely that you will have the opportunity to meet them during your session]
Before or after the session, you may be able to obtain your photo ID and your books, depending on the day. As the bookstore is on the Middletown campus, students attending MxCC@Platt will not be able to get books during the visit.
Parents and other family support are welcome but the session is designed for students new to the college and the “hands-on” tech clinic/my.commnet session is limited to “students only” due to FERPA regulations and space constraints. All student information is confidential.
Parents are strongly encouraged to visit the “Role of Parents and Family” webpage on the NSO website.
Light snack refreshments will be available; feel free to bring your own iced coffee or tea.
REMEMBER TO BRING: your Banner ID number, last four digits of your Social Security number (for the technology session), and your New Student Advising and Registration booklet (which you should have received prior to meeting with an advisor), a photo ID and your course schedule. You will need your Banner ID number to log onto my.commnet and obtain your photo ID card.

Exceptions: Fully Online-only students, those who already hold a degree from another institution and those transferring into MxCC with more than 15 earned credits are notrequired to attend. You are welcome though as you will meet other students, learn what is specific to Middlesex, reinforce some of what you may already know about succeeding in college and get your questions answered.
Please select an Orientation session immediately after you register for your classes as seating is limited and we will be unable to accommodate all students who select sessions toward the end of August.
