MxCC Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society Earns National and Regional Recognition

York ClementApril 26, 2019 (Middletown, Conn.) — The Middlesex Community College (MxCC) chapter of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), Beta Gamma Xi, received the national Distinguished Chapter Officer Team Award at the PTK Catalyst Convention held on April 5 in Orlando, Fla.

The MxCC chapter was the only one from New England to earn national PTK recognition this year. Chapter president York Clement accepted the award on behalf of fellow team officers Alexander Foster (secretary), Debra Kennedy (vice president), and Benjamin Mausteller (senate representative).

Earlier this year, the MxCC chapter earned the regional officer team award at the PTK New England Conference held at Asnuntuck Community College. The chapter was also designated as a Five-Star Level Chapter for 2019—one of 11 to receive this distinction out of the 53 New England PTK chapters.

In addition, Clement and PTK member Jacob Murphy were recognized as part of the All-Connecticut Academic Team at an April 12 ceremony held at the Connecticut state capitol.

Finally, MxCC’s Beta Gamma Xi chapter was named a 2019 REACH Chapter (Recognizing Excellence in Acceptance and Completion with Honors) for an 18.6% acceptance rate, higher than the international rate of 14.4%. This program acknowledges and rewards PTK chapters that excel in the area of membership development.

The All-Connecticut Academic Team recognizes the outstanding scholarly achievements and leadership accomplishments of students enrolled in Connecticut’s community and junior colleges. To earn the Five-Star Level status, chapters work on different levels of engagement to develop academic, leadership, and service-related skills. For the team award, chapter officers demonstrate an exceptional atmosphere of teamwork, leadership abilities, promoting engagement, and enthusiasm for PTK’s hallmarks of leadership, fellowship, and service.

Phi Theta Kappa, an international honor society, was established nationally in 1918 and chartered at Middlesex Community College in 1996.
