Course Description:

Microsoft Excel for Windows will be utilized to design, organize, and manipulate business applications. Students will use introductory through advanced features working with worksheets, databases and charts.  

 

Scope of Course:

Microsoft Excel offers a comprehensive study of spreadsheet concepts and skills. This course begins with the basics of Microsoft Excel creating a basic worksheet using formulas and formatting techniques.  The students will expand their skill set using worksheet functions, charts and graphics, Excel lists, multiple worksheets and workbooks, editing and web tools, data tables and scenario management and solver.

 

The course provides the students with hands-on tutorials and application cases for each topic.  The final project integrates all Excel functions and tools.

Importance of Course in Program/Discipline:

CSA 135 – Microsoft Excel is a very important component of the Business Division. In today’s highly competitive and technologically advanced society, good spreadsheet computer skills are an imperative. Students in CSA 135 are able to acquire and/or refine their worksheet skills. The ability to plan, design and create worksheets using functions and tools allows the student to analyze and synthesize business information.  The reports and data worksheets will enhance productivity in a company and will serve the students in both academic and professional careers. Knowledge of the Microsoft Excel is highly desirable in today’s workplace. The course gives a very practical technical foundation and allows the student to learn and apply the advanced features to business data.

 

Learning Outcomes:

The goal of CSA 135 is to provide each student with a comprehensive course in Microsoft Excel. The following list describes the learning outcomes that support this overall goal:

§  Understand and apply formulas and functions.

§  Develop professional –looking worksheets using formatting tools.

§  Chart and graph worksheet data.

§  Work with Excel Lists.

Attendance Policy:

Students are Expected to participate in an online course through assignments, projects, Exams and chat sessions.  An online course allows the student to establish a flexible schedule to do work; however, chat sessions will be scheduled times.  Discussion Postings will be 5% of your final grade.  Open chats are strongly recommended to interact with other students and clarify any questions or problems that are causing difficulty in your understanding of the course assignments.

 

 

Evaluation (Exams, term papers, projects, etc., and percentages towards final grades):

The final grade will be determined by two Exams and hands-on computer applications projects, and will be affected by course participation, conduct, and attendance.

There are no make-up Exams given unless arrangements have been made prior to the Exam.

Each unit will cover specific topics from the textbook as well as a software product. Each student is Expected to read the assigned chapters, do all homework assignments, and complete all hands-on lab assignments. The labs, homework assignments, and test scores will be used to calculate the student’s overall grade.  An assignment sheet lists projects, quizzes and Exams.  All will be posted on the Calendar as well.
