Foundation Achievements

Scholarships Awarded in 2017

Each May, the MxCC Foundation awards scholarships ranging from $500 to $1,500 to incoming, returning, and graduating students. In 2017, $71,400 in scholarships were awarded to 77 eligible students. This program depends upon donations from generous individuals, businesses, civic organizations, alumni, and charitable foundations, along with annual fundraising events such as the Red Moon Gala and the Cap and Gown Road Race. Recipients are selected by the Foundation’s Scholarship Committee. For more information about the 2018 scholarship process, please contact Corey Martell at 860.343.5701 or Cheryl Dumont-Smith at 860.343.5869. Congratulations to the 2017 recipients!

New Funds in 2016–17

Several funds were established during the past year to express the unique wishes and interests
of different donors to support students at Middlesex Community College.

David Champion Memorial Scholarship

Throughout David Champion’s busy life, he exuded great love for his friends and family, animals, golf and the Boston Red Sox. David was a comptroller for Continental Can Corporation and climbed the ladder of success with only a high school degree, believing there is no substitute for hard work and dedication. Because of this, his family reached out to the MxCC Foundation to establish a scholarship for hardworking individuals wishing to study veterinary technology. Although they have no previous connection to MxCC, David’s family believed that this program would have appealed to him, so they created an endowed fund in his name, the David Champion Memorial Scholarship.

Legacy Patio Project Fund

This fund was created to support the construction of a 50th anniversary plaza, where donors can contribute to various levels of naming opportunities. At this time, the Connecticut state budget situation has caused a shift in the original plan for a full legacy patio on the Middlesex campus. Planning is now underway to create an area near Chapman Hall, where the names of donors will be displayed until this full campus beautification project can be completed.

Darrell D. & Julia Stark Scholarship

When Darrell Stark passed away in February 2016, he left behind a legacy of love and commitment to others that his family and friends decided to celebrate in a permanent way. Therefore, the Darrell D. and Julia Stark Scholarship was established for veterans choosing to attend Middlesex Community College. The fund has recently reached the endowed level of $10,000 and, as it grows over time, will support a veteran’s education up to $4,000 per academic year. For this year, the Stark family awarded a first gift of $500 to celebrate Darrell and Julia’s memory.

Single Line of Hope Fund

In the summer of 2016, an individual with a vision got acquainted with MxCC. After experiencing firsthand how unexpected life expenses can impact one’s ability to complete an education, Robin Gilmartin of West Hartford made an ongoing commitment to help. The Single Line of Hope Fund was created to offer short-term assistance to MxCC students facing life circumstances. Although some preference will be given to single parents, all valid requests will be considered.

Dr. Anna Wasescha Honors Program Fund

A large group of college and community supporters gathered on Commencement afternoon (May 25, 2017) to bid a fond farewell to Anna Wasescha, MxCC’s president from 2011–17, as she departed to lead the West Central Initiative, a community foundation in her home state of Minnesota. The College community presented President Wasescha with this new fund in her honor to thank MxCC’s sixth president for her fervent support and dedication to the honors program. The fund will reward honors students for academic achievement and civic engagement through incentive awards and scholarships, while providing financial resources for specific events and special programs for, and through, the honors program.

It’s very easy to start a fund. If you have a particular interest or area of the College that you would like to support, please call Associate Dean Cheryl Dumont-Smith at 860.343.5869.

New Day Funds at the Foundation

The New Day Fund grant program was created by the MxCC Foundation board to provide annual mini-grants up to $1,000 in support of a variety of faculty-inspired projects that raise the level of student experience. Last year, the program gave out seven awards totaling $6,766.

Art, Poetry, and Meditative Sound Healing Workshops

A series of student workshops were conducted during the Spring 2017 semester, which included the use of poetry, meditation, and painting to show the interconnectedness of these three disciplines, as well as the patterns of organization and deeper intuitive thought that permeate all types of creative pursuits. Three instructors worked with 26 students who were able to participate in the workshops free of charge.

Collaborative Course for Students in the Nutrition Field

Funds were given to support the development and launch of a Nutrition and Dietetics course to prepare students for early transfer to other institutions for the completion of study in this field.

Experience College Day 2017

This event brought more than 100 students from area high schools to MxCC for a day to experience the academic and student services side of college life. Fee waivers and other incidental expenses for participants were provided, while defraying the cost of bus transportation to and from the participating high schools.

Computer Hardware Assembly

These funds were used to purchase the parts necessary to build and assemble two computers. Support of this class project gives students valuable hands-on experience with computer hardware.

Graphing Calculators for Loan at the MxCC Library

Nine additional graphing calculators were purchased to support students via the loan program at the library. These calculators are being used at every level of mathematics, as well as in physics, chemistry, engineering, business, and technology.

Law Enforcement Testing Stipends

Funding was provided for six students who completed the Criminal Justice department requirements but needed support to pay for the cost of law enforcement testing.

Veterinary Technology National Online Practice

The purchase of 17 practice examinations for this program assisted students in their preparation for this required national exam. Student use of this tool greatly helped them in their academic preparation for this necessary step.

The Creation and Funding of the Magic Food Bus

Thanks to the vision and persistence of Professor Judith Felton, former coordinator of the Human Services Program and MxCC’s Office of Civic Engagement, the College established a Magic Food Bus on campus that functions as a food pantry for all members of the Middlesex Community College community.

The Magic Food Bus opened in 2015 and continues to accept food and fund donations. For more details, please call the Foundation office at 860.343.5869.
