Proposal Title
Proposed Modification for the Department of Fine & Graphic Arts
Proposal Type
Request for Action (obtain approval)
Proposal Description/Rationale
The Department of Fine & Graphic Arts would like to discontinue the separate Graphic Design Option because we no longer have the enrollment numbers to sustain a separate track. Instead we would like to offer one degree in Fine Arts with 4 electives allowing the students to focus on either digital/graphic design courses or fine art studio courses. We also feel our program needs more flexibility in the number of electives available.

Does this proposal have campus-wide implications? If yes, how so? If not a campus-wide concern, you may want to refer this issue to your supervisor
This proposal could boost enrollment in the DGA courses since we are offering more electives in this area.
Does this proposal address a strategic priority of the college? If so, describe.
Strategy 1 – 1: The academic curriculum of the college will be responsive to shifting workforce demands and student interest and incorporate innovative and emerging teaching methods and delivery modalities.
* Undertake effort to review program viability based on workforce demands and student interest
*Optimize student retention efforts through academic coursework and student supportsThrough this proposed modification the students will be given more flexibility in designing their coursework through the additional offering of fine art or digital electives. Students can determine how much emphasis they wish to place on either digital or studio techniques. Students also will have the freedom to mix and match these two separate areas more readily to customize their program of study. With more customized course of studies the students can more closely meet the needs for the specific area of art they wish to pursue. This simplified course template will ultimately enhance their educational experience at MxCC and thus student retention.
Does this proposal have budgetary implications? If so, describe projected costs and funding sources.
The budget should remain the same. There will be no impact on our budget with the exception of the elimination of the GRA*251 Advanced Graphic Design course.
Is this proposal time sensitive? If so, describe the timeframe for implementation.
Yes. We would like to implement this program modification for the Fall Semester 2020.
