Proposal Title
Course Proposal for ENG093: Introduction to College Reading and Writing
Proposal Type
Request for Action (obtain approval)
Proposal Description/Rationale
This is a course proposal for a 3 credit version of ENG*096. Currently, ENG*096 has a very wide range of skill levels. By adding a 3 credit version of the same course, students who place on the higher end of the scale will be able to meet course outcomes in 3 credit hours instead of 6 allowing for more time to take other courses. This is also a common course in the system; it is currently offered at Asnuntuck Community College, Manchester Community College, Tunxis Community College, and Quinebaug Valley Community College. Housatonic Community College and Naugatuck Valley Community College offer a 3 credit version of ENG*096; however, they number it differently.
Does this proposal have campus-wide implications? If yes, how so? If not a campus-wide concern, you may want to refer this issue to your supervisor
If approved, this course would affect Accuplacer placement scores, advising, and registration. Students who place into ENG*093, who formerly would have placed into ENG*096, will have more room in their schedules to take classes, so it may possibly help with class enrollment numbers.
Does this proposal address a strategic priority of the college? If so, describe.
One of the strategic priorities is retention. Currently, when students place into ENG*096, they are encumbered with a 6 credit English course. Many of these students need this amount of time on task; however, there are some who do not. Consequently, these students may get frustrated and decide to drop the class or leave school. With ENG*093, this is less likely to happen.
Does this proposal have budgetary implications? If so, describe projected costs and funding sources.
No
Is this proposal time sensitive? If so, describe the timeframe for implementation.
No. It would be great to be able to offer the course in Fall 2019, but it is not essential.
