Sept. 10, 2020 (Middletown, Conn.) — Middlesex Community College (MxCC) announced a series of information sessions for students interested in a studying for a career in the manufacturing industry.
The virtual events will occur on September 22, October 20, November 17 and December 15. The Tuesday sessions will run from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. and will be moderated by Tracy Ariel, director of advanced manufacturing programs at the college. Prospective students can register for the online events on the MxCC website.
“The MxCC manufacturing programs provide a solid foundation in manufacturing skills for employment as a computer numerical control (CNC) machine operator, inspection or logistics. The classes are geared to support students who are currently working in the industry as well as those who want to gain access to Connecticut’s robust and high-tech manufacturing field,” said Ariel.
The sessions will cover the manufacturing industry in the state, Middlesex manufacturing program information including goals, degrees and certificates, as well as the application process, assessment testing, and how to pay.
Classes are running now and include on-ground, hands-on manufacturing machining skills as well as online theory courses.
Middlesex student Elizabeth Moag, a manufacturing machine technology major from Berlin, Conn., said she always wanted to pursue a career in manufacturing. “I want to show that women are intelligent and strategic, and have what it takes to succeed in the manufacturing world.” Her goal is to help break barriers for women in this field and become a manufacturing engineer.
The college also received a $10,000 grant for student scholarships from the Gene Haas Foundation last year. Haas Automation is a leading national builder of CNC machine tools. Moag earned one of the scholarships.
Manufacturers in Connecticut are looking to replace thousands of aging workers in the next 10 years as companies work with students to mentor and transition them into this growing and challenging field.
