Middlesex Community College kicks off 50th anniversary celebration

Sept. 20, 2016 — As students return to fall classes, Middlesex Community College (MxCC) is beginning a yearlong celebration to mark the 50th anniversary of its founding.

The first event was held on Sept. 7, when MxCC President Anna Wasescha accepted an “Official Citation” from the Connecticut General Assembly. State Rep. Matthew Lesser read the congratulatory document which was sponsored by local state officials and signed by Secretary of the State Denise Merrill. The lunch-time event was part of the College’s Convocation ceremony, when campus faculty and administrators gather to welcome the new academic year.

“Middlesex Community College is the shining star of the state’s community college system,” said Rep. Lesser. “Students come from not only Middlesex County, but Hartford and New Haven as well, even though those areas have similar schools.”

President Wasescha and Cheryl Dumont-Smith, associate dean of development, invited everyone to several other events acknowledging MxCC’s anniversary. On Saturday, Oct. 1, is the dazzling Red Moon Gala, the celebratory kickoff and fundraiser to be held at 6 p.m. on the Middletown campus. The evening includes a silent auction to benefit MxCC students, as well as food, music and dancing. To become a sponsor or order tickets, please visit https://mxcc.edu/redmoon/.

Other plans include a special retiree luncheon on Sept. 14, an alumni art exhibit from Sept. 15 to Oct. 21, and a public historical display that will hang in Connecticut’s State Capitol from February 1–15, 2017, and then travel to other locations in Connecticut.

In 50 years, MxCC has proudly educated more than 80,000 students. Alumni, parents, students and friends are encouraged to share personal memories and stories on a special website: https://mxcc.edu/fifty/tell-us-story/.
