Middlesex Community College welcomed interested students with informative exhibits and musical entertainment at an open house held on Thursday, July 19, 2018. Visitors also toured the scenic 35-acre Middletown campus on the bright and sunny afternoon.
Prospective students and their families explored classes, met with advisors and faculty members, and browsed displays set up outdoors from a variety of the 65 degree and certificate programs offered at MxCC. The event also allowed students to apply for Fall 2018 admission on the spot. More than 40 new students registered during the day. Fall classes begin on Tuesday, August 28.
Current MxCC student Veronika Petkovich of Old Saybrook brought her brother Donovan, who attended the open house in search of the right career field to study. “I came to tour the campus and see what programs are offered. Plus the virtual reality demo was really neat,” he said, after visiting the college’s cutting-edge Center for New Media.
Other academic exhibits on display included biotechnology, criminal justice, environmental science, honors program, manufacturing, radiologic technology, psychology, veterinary technology, and the new national gas field technician certificate program.
Middletown Police Officer Anthony Knapp, from the department’s community outreach program, brought a police vehicle that visitors could sit inside. The vehicle is equipped with a computer that officers use to run licenses, check warrants, or protection orders. The police department also runs an internship program with local schools, which includes criminal justice students from MxCC.
Louanne Tirado of Meriden came to look into advancing her career in the health care field. She recently completed an emergency medical technician (EMT) program and now wants to further her skills with a nursing degree. “This is such a great event,” she said while checking out the displays with her daughter, Melanie. Last year, Melanie took an early childhood education course at MxCC@Platt, the college’s Meriden location, and transferred those credits to study psychology at UConn this fall.
Earlier in the day, music from the local reggae band, Tales of Joy, filled the air as attendees signed in and walked past the Founders Hall Pavilion onto campus that overlooks the Connecticut River Valley. Later in the afternoon, former MxCC student and Hot 93.7 radio personality Stevey Newnez of New Britain played the station’s energetic hip-hop and R&B hits.
All guests received free tote bags with many staying to enjoy Vecchitto’s Italian Ice or support the MxCC Foundation at a hot dog sale.
If you are thinking about fall college classes to start or advance your career, it’s time to act! Registration at Middlesex Community College is underway. Apply in person in the Middletown Enrollment Services Office on Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in Founders Hall (room 153). Continuing education class registration goes on throughout the fall.
